Neurofeedback Side Effects

Most clinics answer this with one word: none. That is not quite true, and saying so makes everything else harder to trust. Here is what people actually report.

Most clinics answer this question with one word: none. That is not quite true, and saying so makes the rest of what a clinic tells you harder to trust.

Neurofeedback does not have side effects in the way medication does. Nothing enters your body, so there is nothing to metabolise and nothing to build up. But people do report effects after sessions, particularly early on, and you should know what those look like before you start.

What people commonly report

Tiredness. The most frequent one. Some people feel noticeably drained for a few hours after a session, particularly in the first week. It is usually compared to mental fatigue after a long exam rather than illness.

Feeling wired or restless. Less common, and usually associated with protocols training faster activity. It tends to settle within a few hours.

Headache. Occasional, usually mild, usually early in a course.

Vivid dreams or changes in sleep. Often one of the first things people notice. Sleep frequently shifts before anything else does, and not always smoothly at first.

Irritability. Sometimes reported in children in the first week or two. Parents notice it more than the child does.

These are typically mild and short-lived. Most settle as training progresses, and many people report nothing at all.

Why it happens

The straightforward explanation is that you have just spent 30 to 45 minutes doing focused mental work. Tiredness afterwards is not mysterious.

The more specific explanation is that a protocol may be slightly off for you. Neurofeedback is individualised, and finding the right settings sometimes takes adjustment. Persistent tiredness or agitation after sessions is useful information, not a problem to be endured.

What to do about it

Tell us. This is the part people get wrong. Clients often assume tiredness or irritability is normal and do not mention it, which means we lose the chance to adjust. Report it at the next session.

Keep a simple note. How you slept, energy levels, mood, anything that changed. Patterns are much easier to see across two weeks of notes than from memory.

Do not push through a consistent bad reaction. If every session leaves you feeling worse for a day, the protocol needs reviewing against your brain map. That is a straightforward adjustment, not a failure.

What is not a normal side effect

Speak to us and to a doctor if you experience:

  • Worsening mood that persists between sessions rather than settling
  • Any seizure activity, particularly if you have a seizure history
  • Severe or persistent headaches
  • A significant deterioration in functioning at school or work

None of these is common. All of them warrant stopping and reassessing rather than continuing.

A note on medication

Neurofeedback does not interact chemically with medication. What can happen is that as regulation changes, a dose that suited you before may start to feel too strong. Some people on stimulant medication notice this during a course.

If that happens, it is a conversation with your prescribing doctor. Not with us, and not a decision to make on your own. Never stop or change medication because you have started neurofeedback.

Comparing the risk picture

Parents considering this for a child usually have a specific comparison in mind. Stimulant medication for ADHD is effective, and it also carries a documented side effect profile including appetite suppression, sleep disturbance, mood changes and tics. Research suggests up to 30% of children either do not respond adequately or experience significant adverse effects, which is why families look for alternatives in the first place.

The honest framing is that neurofeedback has a lighter side effect profile and, in head-to-head research, a smaller effect on ADHD symptoms than medication. That trade-off is the actual decision in front of you, and it is one to make with the doctor managing your child’s care rather than with a clinic website.

What we do

We ask about how you felt after the previous session every time, not just at review points. Early adjustments are normal, and we would rather change a protocol at session four than discover at session twenty that you have been feeling flat since the start.
