Are you prone to overthinking? Is your mind active when you don’t need it to be? These 5 tricks can help you lead a more peaceful life.
If you’re one of those who can’t sleep at night because your brain is processing a million thoughts at once, say aye! Many of us deal with an overactive mind. Just when we’re about to hit the pillow, thoughts about the next day’s meeting keep us up, right? Or we go on an overdrive about something we or someone else said that might have been hurtful. If only we control our mind and make it act according to our wishes! Well the good news is, that you can. You can use tricks and ways to calm your mind.
1. What you should know about negative thoughts
It’s not uncommon for your mind to imagine the worst. It happens to most of us where we tend to focus more on the negatives than the positives. But that doesn’t mean you should take your thoughts to be the gospel truth. You can overcome the negative in your mind by focusing more on the positive. And one of the many ways to do this is by indulging in positive affirmations and meditations.
Positive affirmations: These are some positive statements that you repeat to yourself, assuring that all is and will be well. Listening to statements such as ‘I am healthy, ‘I am leading my best life,’ ‘I am capable of love,’ can help your mind function in a more positive way. All you need to do is take 10 minutes out from your schedule and listen to these affirmations. Here’s an article by Medium to help you understand how these affirmations can help you.
Manifestation meditation: In this type of meditation, you are made to picture every little detail of your dream life. Be it your wish to be richer, more confident, have a successful relationship with your partner, all desires can be manifested with this method of meditation. You can train your mind to imagine your best life and instill more positivity in your everyday routine. Check out a video here.
2. Achieve small goals
This must be throwing you off completely right now. How does this even make sense when all your life, you’ve been told to work towards a single, large goal, right? Well the truth is, that you will lead a much happier life if you achieve smaller everyday goals, than one big life goal. Research has shown that having one big life goal can prove to be a big burden for people. On the other hand, if they complete simple tasks successfully everyday, people feel happier and more confident.
So ditch that one big goal for smaller everyday goals. Which technically means that you need to get off your derriere and get to work! In order to have everyday goals, you need to have things to do. So set yourself some daily targets; it can be simple stuff like cleaning your cupboard, filling your journal, making someone smile, calling your grandma etc.
Once you start working on your everyday goals and achieving them, you will be able to divert your mind. This will help you keep your overthinking at bay. Remember, a busy mind is a happy mind and an idle mind as they say, is a devil’s workshop!
3. Work on your relationships
According to the Upword Spiral Workbook, people who have strong relationships with their friends and family members, lead a happier and peaceful life. Well this is no newsflash. But if you have broken relationships, it’s time to mend them. This doesn’t mean that you need to spend every second day with your family and friends. It means that even if you have a handful of friends, make sure your relationship with them is solid and one that gives you happiness.
Having a healthy social life has a direct impact on how positive and content your mind is. You need to gauge on how your relationships make you feel. Reflect on whether you are happy in a relationship or sad or scared or tired etc. Keep relationships that truly make you feel good. And once you have that figured out, keep in touch or indulge in activities together. Doing this will take your mind off negative thoughts.
